In its late ordinary meeting of the year, Brazil’s National Technical Commission of Biosafety (CTNBio) has approved the commercialization of the genetically-modified MON 87708 soybean. Developed by Monsanto, it is the first technology launched in Brazil that is tolerant to Dicamba herbicide.
The approval was agreed upon last Thursday (12.08) during a meeting held in Brasília, and released by the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications. The deliberation was a result of an authorization procedure started two years ago, on October 24, 2014.
During the same meeting of CTNBio, there was also approval given for the commercial release of soybeans tolerant to Dicamba and to glyphosate MON 87708 x MON 89899. The decision authorizes the use of transgenics “with the aim to release it in the natural environment, its commercial use, and any other activities related to this GMO and any progeny derivatives from it”.
