Argentinian government expects record harvest of 130 million tons

The official estimates of the crop season 2016/17 were announced during the Agricultural Outlook Day organized by the Secretary of Agroindustrial Markets.

According to this projection, wheat and corn production will increase by 30% and 15%, respectively, and soybean production would reach 56 million tons.

Due to the growth of cereals, soybean production would fall by 5%, but the country's main crop would still remain within the margin.

The data was delivered by Luis Urriza, the Undersecretary of Agriculture, who said "We have a completely different scenario, and this is due to the measures taken by the government in recent months that promised to provide reliable figures, which translate into agribusiness production.”

In detail, according to official estimates, the production of wheat will be 17% more than the previous season, covering an area of 5 million hectares. The production will increase by 30%, reaching almost 15 million tons.

In corn, the production is estimated at more than 7 million hectares of planted area. This is equal to 5.5% more than the previous year. The productive growth will almost be 12%, reaching 44 million tons.

Soy shows a decrease in area and production due to the boom of cereals. The decrease in the planted area will be almost 3%. The production will also decrease by 4.7%, totaling 56 million tons.

Lastly, the sunflower production area would rise by 14% of the area sown (1.6 million hectares), with a production of 17%, totaling 3.5 million tons. "We estimate that the harvest will be around 130 million tons," Urriza said.
