The Georg August University of Göttingen and K+S KALI GmbH will continue cooperating through the joint IAPN research institute. An appropriate agreement has now been signed and will run until 1 October 2022 with the possibility of an extension.
Within the six years or so since its formation, the IAPN has successfully established itself in research and teaching in the field of applied plant nutrition and the expectations of both the sponsoring organizations have been fully met. Acting as an interface between science and economy, the institute addresses current issues arising from practice and communicates new findings to agriculture. The IAPN conducts research into issues related to resource efficiency.
Climate change is resulting in longer and more extreme periods of drought worldwide. How plants can make better use of scarce water, for example, regarding the nutrients potassium and magnesium - an important issue in agricultural practice - has been a focal point of research during the first few years. New methods have been developed that enable the efficient use of water by agricultural crops to be analyzed. "Alongside basic research, being oriented toward practice is always a key consideration for us," says Prof.
Klaus Dittert, PhD, the scientific director of the IAPN, adding that "Since the start of our work at the IAPN, we've already achieved significant research results concerning resource efficiency."
K+S KALI GmbH also plays an important role in this regard. "IAPN K+research findings are not only published quickly but are also immediately incorporated into our product development processes to then reach farmers directly through our international network of agriculturalists," explains Prof. Andreas Gransee, PhD, head of research and advisory services at K+S KALI GmbH and the person responsible for the IAPN on behalf of the company. "This means that the practitioners on the ground can quickly profit from new findings."
Promoting the exchange of information in the field of science, through residencies for international researchers, for example, is an important IAPN task. The IAPN has initiated an interdisciplinary dialog on the role of magnesium in crop nutrition, the quality of foodstuffs, and in relation to human health through two symposia, which were held in Göttingen in 2012 and in São Paulo in 2014. Through a series of events entitled "IAPN im Dialog" ("In Dialogue with the IAPN"), the institute also regularly provides a discussion forum for students, scientists and other guests.
