Boni INTA was developed by researchers from the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA), San Pedro, in Buenos Aires province of Argentina, after seven years of crossovers and selections.

The new cultivar of sweet potatoes is known for its pulp and orange skin, with short cycle , good yields and texture. It emerges as an alternative supply to meet the growing demand for these products.

According to its breeder Héctor Martinique, Boni INTA stands out for its pulp and orange skin, its semi-wet short cycle, good yields and texture. It produces seven potatoes per plant, with an average variation in size and shape without cracking and oxidation.

Also, the new variety has 35% higher antioxidant capacity than cultivar Beauregard. Due to the similarity of the skin color and the flesh, its appearance is not affected if peeled during handling and storage. Furthermore, it is moderately sweet, and consumers reported a similar taste as in Morada INTA.

He explained that when the harvest was done between 110 and 120 days, the yields would be between 25 and 35 tons per hectare of sweet potato (between 200 and 500 grams), while harvesting done at 150 days would yield 50 tons per hectare.

Boni INTA originated from seeds obtained from the polycross plots of INTA El Colorado, Formosa, where 30 parents varieties were crossed. In 2009, he planted these seeds in INTA San Pedro. Among the plants obtained, one was selected owing to its appearance, elongated oblong shape, pale orange skin and orange flesh.

The plant was semi-erect with main branches growing up to 1.5 meters with abundant foliage that determines its high ground cover (75-90%) at 35-40 days. It had short-length internodes between 3 and 5 cm, with diameter of 4 to 6 millimeters between intermediate internodes.

Its stem was green, with no secondary color, with a moderately pubescent apex. The leaves were 8 to 15 cm in size, with cordate or sometimes lobed blade length, presenting two types of leaves on the same plant.

The five-lobed leaves were tooth-shaped with a triangular center and were green-yellow in color with partially purple ribs below the surface.

It normally does not flourish in field plantations. The flowers were between 4 and 4.5 centimeters long and about 3.5 centimeters wide.
