A steering committee for a project to produce rice tolerant to cold and herbicides held a meeting in Chillan, Chile, to exchange information.
The meeting was held at the Institute of Agricultural Research (INIA) at Quilamapu Regional Center. The progress of the project "New strategies in the generation of rice varieties tolerant to cold and herbicides Stage II" was discussed.
During the meeting, 30 beamlines of Clearfield were considered for selection, and the commercial variety Zafiro-INIA was chosen. The complex selection process resulted in three experimental lines, which were potential candidates for becoming a commercial variety of Clearfield. In the immediate term, these three experimental lines will be subjected to the agronomic evaluation process and a multiplication program during the season.
Meetings with producers were organized to discuss the project. Further, advances in the development of the Clearfield variety have been discussed at various points by researchers working with the Scientific and Technological Development Support Fund. Some researchers are participating in the "Accompanying Program of the Farmer."
A training course on “No Till Farming” was held by the Latin American Fund for Irrigated Rice, PASO, FIA, and INDAP, with researchers from INIA participating in the event.
