SOPA estimates India’s soybean output rise by 57% in 2016/17

Soybean production in India is expected to increase by 57% than previous year in 2016/17 at 108.789 lakh tones as against 69.288 lakh tonnes, according to the first crop estimate of Soybean Processors Association of India (SOPA).
Industry experts feel soybean meal exports to get a boost from higher soybean output this season in the country.
India is a traditional exporter of soybean meal mainly to South East Asian countries.
But exports have been negligible since past two years because of higher Indian meal prices in the international market. Indian soymeal has lost many key markets to its competitors Argentina and Brazil.
Soybean production in Madhya Pradesh is expected to be over 60 per cent than previous year.
SOPA has estimated soybean production in the state at 55.863 lakh tones as against 34.125 lakh tonnes a year ago.
The estimated growth in the output is expected due to improvement in yields from 608 kg per hectare a year ago to 1,034 kg per hectare this season, the statement from SOPA showed.
"In most of the area of Malwa region, soybean crop is in very good condition and production is expected higher this season," said SOPA's executive director D N Pathak, in a statement.
Pathak said, about 5 per cent to 10 per cent of the soybean crop in the state was damaged due to waterlogging in some areas while lack of rains during the flowering stage in other areas hit the productivity of the crop. Madhya Pradesh contributes over 50 per cent to total soybean production of the country.
