China’s Shandong Luba Chemical Co., Ltd recently signed a technology development contract with a research team from Zhejiang University of Technology to collaborate on research in the biological catalytic synthesis and industrialization of L- glufosinate-ammonium. The R&D costs are expected to reach some 12 million yuan.
Glufosinate-ammonium is an important burn-down herbicide with molecular chirality, of which only L- glufosinate-ammonium has any herbicidal activity. However, despinner glufosinate-ammonium is currently available in the market as a herbicide product. Through the research collaboration, Luba expects to synthesise L- glufosinate-ammonium with high optical activity through genetic, protein and biocatalysis engineering and then to obtain new registration from China’s ICAMA( Institute for the Control of Agrochemicals, Ministry of Agriculture ) for this product.
Glufosinate-ammonium has attracted much attention since 2015, while market demand surged due to its limited supply. The price of glufosinate-ammonium had once surpassed 300,000 yuan per ton. Currently, glufosinate-ammonium registration in China has reached 194 applicants, among which technical registration reached 36 and formulation was reported at 151. With the rapid expansion in capacity, competition on price became much more fierce, which resulted in a drastic drop to 120,000 yuan per ton, at present.
