China Province notes to enhance supervision on paraquat business

Diquat is the 3rd largest non-selective herbicide in the world, following glyphosate and paraquat. It shows rapid weed control effect, and lower toxicity than paraquat. In addition, diquat has effect similar to paraquat. In this context, diquat is increasingly substituting paraquat, when paraquat AS is banned.
However, diquat has disadvantages such as high price and limited weed control spectrum. Many underground producers add paraquat in diquat products, in a move to cut down the production costs and improve the efficacy. Additionally, there are certain quantities of paraquat stocks which were not sold before 1 July in the market. This offers opportunities to those producers.
Targeted at the current market, the institute requested that local agrochemicals control institutes and pesticide supervision departments should take measures to enhance the supervision on herbicide business. Specifically,
1. Sales: to strengthen the supervision and increase the sampling tests; to confiscate problematic products and make punishments according to laws and regulations
2. Production: to punish producers who use paraquat to imitate diquat or add paraquat into diquat without approval, in accordance with laws and regulations; if a crime is constituted, it should be transferred to public security departments promptly for stringent crack-down
3. Paraquat stocks: the agricultural departments should co-operate with public security departments to put seals on those stored paraquat, and should raise opinions for treatment
4. To apply for fiscal funds to carry out harmless disposal of sequestrated counterfeit and inferior pesticides
