Monsanto South Africa has applied to conduct a trial on the use of genetically modified (GM) maize products.

The field trials will test the ability of GM organisms to fight insects, herbicides and tough climates.

Monsanto's Andrew Bennett explains that there will be three types of maize tested during the trial, should it be approved.

The maize hybrids will combat maize stalk borer, protect it from herbicides such as glyphosate and survive drought conditions.

"In order to get approval to plant these products, we need to do test to show that they work. This is what the trials are about." said Andrew Bennett, technology development head for Monsanto Africa.

The agricultural company says the success of the GM maize trial could help with food sustainability and efficiency in maize production.
