Native Traits Corporation recently announced the successful launch of its EaSY (TM) inbred line conversion program.
As Dr. John L. McIntyre, the Executive Vice President, Business Development for Native Traits noted, EaSY is a naturally-occurring trait that will improve the yield of corn inbreds by around 50 percent.
"The prospect of improving inbred yields is very exciting," said McIntyre, "as it results in a reduction in production costs and increased profits for the producer. To our knowledge, this is the first commercial trait that increases inbred yield to this extent."
Dr. James W. Friedrich, the President and CEO of Native Traits, pointed out other advantages of the EaSY program. Native Traits expects to launch a series of naturally-occurring traits that can be stacked on EaSY. Cold tolerance and drought resistance are just two examples of traits that will make corn less vulnerable to environmental stress. Because these genetic traits are non-GMO, seed producers and farmers are attracted to Native Traits technology.
"More sustainable, more profitable is the objective," he said. "All of this is a clear demonstration that by the application of NT RECOVERY (TM) technology, we can take advantage of the natural genetic traits present in ancestral strains of corn."
As Friedrich noted, the main challenge is to produce more food in a time of climate change and to do so in a way that makes for a more sustainable and profitable corn production system. Low corn grain prices are driving a re-ordering of the seed industry. Any technology that improves the profitability of seed producers and farmers is prized.
