The presence of the caterpillar Helicoverpa armigera in the southwestern region of Paraná, a state in southern Brazil, was confirmed. The monitoring was done through a program held by the Codepa cooperative with the support of Ihara by traps spread at strategic points in over 10 municipalities in the state and including some places bordering with the state of Santa Catarina.
“We have built 30 traps with goal of capturing the adults of Helicoverpa. One unique trap captured over seven moth in just one night. This is a worrying result,” alerts Afonso Venzel, an administrator of Ihara. The state of Paraná already suffered from infestations in the years of 2013 and 2014.
According to researcher Carlos Marcelos from the Mato Grosso Institute of Cotton, as the first moths are detected, it is recommended to do an inspection in the field to verify the possible presence of eggs. If they are found, it is indicated to start the application of products. It is necessary to do a control at the early stage of the caterpillars with better efficiency and without causing harm to the farmers.
According to the agronomist of the cooperative, Jocinei Vieira, the damages caused by the caterpillar in the previous years were useful to build awareness to over 500 cooperated farmers. “The verification of planting started over a month ago. We have monitored all the crop periodically through the year, but the traps are more effective because they caught the adults and then we can spray and avoid the hatching eggs of the caterpillar”.
