Govt of Zimbabwe adopted 17 new seed varieties

The government of Zimbabwe recently has released 17 new crop varieties that adapt to the new climatic conditions, thereby giving a better yield for farmers.
Among the latest seed is an orange maize seed, a new development in the country.
The National Variety Release Committee has sanctioned the release of 17 different crop varieties following presentations, monitoring and rigorous selection process.
A number of seed companies presented new varieties for maize, potatoes, sugar beans and soya beans.
Among the varieties introduced is an orange maize variety which is said to be highly nutritious and drought tolerant.
Chairman of the National Variety Release Committee Dr Dumisani Kutywayo says this is a positive development that promotes the growth of the agricultural sector.
“We are happy that 17 crop varieties will be on the market and these varieties suit our current climatic conditions. Of interest is the new orange maize variety which will be in the market for the first time,” said Dr Kutywayo.
Representatives from University of Zimbabwe's Department of Agriculture, who are part of the seed selection committee, say investment in the new crop varieties is the way to go in reviving agricultural production.
The unpredictable weather patterns due to climate change has resulted in decreased yields calling for an investment in new seed varieties that match the changing climate.
