The Australian Office of the Gene Technology Regulator(OGTR) has approved an application from the government research body, the CSIRO, to conduct the limited and controlled release (field trial) of cotton genetically modified (GM) for enhanced fibre quality.
The release is authorised to take place between October 2016 and May 2019 at one site in Narrabri, New South Wales. The maximum planting area of the field trial is 1 hectare per year.
The purpose of the trial is to assess the agronomic performance and fibre quality of the GM cotton grown under Australian field conditions. The GM cotton is not permitted to be used in human food or animal feed.
