Japanese agchem market in vegetables reached $977.7 mn in 2014

According to the report “Pesticide market of vegetables in Japan 2014”, pesticide in Japanese vegetable market was valued at over JPY120.7 billion ($977.7 million at the current rate) in 2014. It was ranked as No.2 contributed to 35% of total pesticides sales JPY 344 billion Yen($ 2,786.4 million at the current rate).

Japanese pesticide market is the most competitive one in the world. Calculated in Jan 2015, it is 4,363 that total number of pesticide registrations used in Japan and many of them were changing every year. For vegetables1,169 of products are registered, where insecticide use took biggest share of total sales in 48%, fungicide use took 32% share and herbicide use took only 17%, much smaller than in cereals.

Japan is humid and hot, so many pests and diseases cause the same time. So pesticides in favor should have the ability to control a wide range of pest and diseases at the same time. If new compound is developed, all kinds of combinations are registered at the same time. Vegetables use pesticides are a good market for agrochemical business. Though arable field for vegetables was 10.6%, application frequencies are high and several times to rice field. It also brings serious resistance problem. Products of high efficacy were preferred by farmers, but treatment cost was also one important factor. Acephate GR was a convenient insecticide to control a wide range of pests by soil treatment and well accepted as home use product.
