Brazil just started a process of adopting the norms of Mercosur countries for the "Maximum Limit of Residue“ of agrochemicals. The goal of the initiative is to unify the criteria in all of South America, because besides Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, all other countries already adhered to the process.

A public consultation on the issue was open (No. 57/2015), and suggestions from the agricultural sector representatives, the organized civil society and individual citizens will be welcomed. The proposals will be received until the next September 8, when a Joint Normative Instruction will be published.

After this, the final words will be from the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply. The measure aims to ease the trade of fresh products between Mercosur countries.

The proposal preserves the individual criteria of each nation for the establishment of unique maximum limits as well as for the calculation of residue impact of agrochemicals among populations. Anvisa is accountable in Brazil to establish the maximum residue limits of agrochemicals on food, while the Ministry of Agriculture supervises residues on imported vegetables.
