Small and middle size soybean, wheat growers of Argentina must declare the origin of their seeds used at the 2015/2016 season. An official norm in this sense was published in the end of June in the country that aims to combat the illegal trade of seeds.
The main target will be the genetically modified seeds. Soy producers, which is the largest farms in the country, must pay property rights when buying seeds such as the 'intact' technology, developed by Monsanto.
Argentina producers do not need to pay for second generation of transgenic seeds, according to local law. However, it is practically impossible to differentiate these cultivars reproduced illegally in the black market because there are not clear registries.
According to a resolution published at the Official Diary of Argentina, purchasers should present "information about the location [stored stocks], surface sown, quantity and weight of the use seed (wheat and soybeans), its varieties and the documents to prove the origin".
The legislation adds the "affidavit should be filled with data on the seeds reserved for own use (...), its varieties and place where it was stored". The measure is applied only to agricultural producers with annual revenue superior to nearly US$ 200,000 considering the official value of the Dollar.
