Abiding a request from the Federal Public Ministry of Brasília, Brazil's Federal Justice has determined a deadline of 90 days for the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) to conclude its toxicological reevaluation of six well-known active ingredients in the country: glyphosate, lactofen, carbofuran, abamectin, thiram, and paraquat, some of which are main pesticides used in the country.
According to the decision, ANVISA has to finalize the studies on the use of these pesticides until the end of September and submit the report results to justice.
The decision, however, does not interrupt the registration and release of new products containing these substances as desired by the attorneyship. In a civil action proposed in March of 2014, the Federal Public Ministry requests the ban of active ingredients alleging there were "new facts" as the World Health Organization pointed carcinogenic characteristics in some ingredients.
"We urge that ANVISA, as an special agency with operation in all sector that can affect the health of the Brazilian population, finishes the procedures of toxicological reevaluation, which taking place since the year of 2008," decided the judge.
