Not least than 221 quarantine species can enter in Brazil in the next few years with the increased traffic of people and products. This is predicted by the book "Plant Protection - Fundamental, Tools, Policies, and Perspectives", launched by the Brazilian Association of Agricultural Defense partnering with the Brazilian Association of Plant Protection and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply.
"Considering that the highways promoted and will continue to promote an increase of vehicle traffic and that the surveillance on borders is insufficient, mostly in the Northern region of the country, it is reasonable to suppose that the events of invasion (invasive species) in South America will become more frequent in the next decades," the book says.
Countries that can represent more treat to Brazil in terms of the types of quarantine species are Chile and Argentina. The danger is considered significant because there is a big volume of vehicles, either public, personal or professional, in those borders.
Besides, Bolivia, Colombia, Peru, and Venezuela are also cited. South America has at least 18 species of plagues which attack soybeans which are not registered in Brazil.
"Among the lessons learned from the helicoverpa armigera , it is certainly the necessity to identify the event of invasion, that is to say, on time to adopt contention measures that can be more effective," affirms the book.
According to the industry expert, the helicoverpa armigera was detected in Brazil in 2013 and the lack of knowledge, at first, was a big problem to manage the pest. So it caused a great loss to farmers. This year, the helicoverpa armigera was not a problem. The management of the track is already easier because the country has good chemical and biological insecticides that make the control of the pest.
