A new and enhanced joint inspection routine has been established by the Advanced Unity of the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Resources (IBAMA) in the International Airport of Sao Paulo. The procedure is done in partnership with the System of International Agricultural System Surveillance, which is linked to the Plant Protection Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply.
The activities, which began in March 2015, include documentary inspections and physical verification of imports. The joint inspection is applied to 100% of the imported cargo at the airport.
Stricter procedures have already shown better results. Of the 104 inspections of agrochemical imports and related items in the last four months, 39 notices of violation were issued and fines generated a value of R$ 261,300 (US$ 82,590). The main irregularities concluded were imports with packaging not complying the norms, lack of registration of importing companies, and absence of annual reports.
Additionally, IBAMA has made presentations to associations and union of the industries of manufacturers, importers and dealers of agrochemicals and related organizations, in aims to clarify doubts related.
