Seed Law amended to regulate seed industry
Recently an amendment to the Seed Law was submitted to the National People’s Congress for a deliberation. The key point of the amendment this time is to give support to the research of basic breeding and to encourage innovative seed breeding industry which combines production with research. Furthermore the new Seed Law will enhance protection of national genetic resources, stating clearly that the joint research with foreign institutions for the use of genetic resources shall be subject to the approval of Chinese government authorities. China has got rich crop genetic resources; this provision will prevent the loss of valuable and rare genetic resources.
First glyphosate-glufosinate mixture registration filed by Chinese enterprise
A Chinese enterprise has filed registration of glyphosate-glufosinate mixture of different proportion for the first time, ICAMA has asked for opinion and comment from pesticide manufacturers on the proportional reasonability. The product is so far still at the early stage of the registration process, which is estimated to take 2 years until approval is obtained. The release of the product to market may cause an increased use of glufosinate.
Mergers and acquisitions of Chinese pesticide manufacturers intensified
Recently there has been a frequent occurrence of mergers and acquisitions between Chinese pesticide manufacturers. In May Yongtai Technology acquired 100% of stakes of Shanghai E-Tong Chemical; Rainbow Chemical acquired 73% of stakes of Ningxia Gerui held by Biok; Wynca invested in the establishment of the Nongfeike and increased its capital in Anyang Quanfeng Aerial Crop Protection. Chinese pesticide manufacturers are actively looking for chances of speeding up the pesticide industry restructuring via equity transaction, mergers and acquisitions. For pesticide manufacturers, the restructuring optimizes product range, regulates industry deployment and enhances competitive edge; for the industry itself, the resources consolidation creates synergy between the industries.
