On April 24th 2015, China's top legislature has adopted an amendment to the 2009 Food Safety Law with reportedly the heaviest penalties yet for offenders. The new law is set to go into effect this October.
Minister Han Changfu emphasized that agricultural authorities at all levels must keep in mind the importance of agro-product quality and safety, and strengthen regulation in this respect in accordance with the law. We should organize law study and publicity activities, get a better knowledge of the requirements of laws and regulations, earnestly fulfill our duties and responsibilities, and take practical measures to implement the law.
Minister Han Changfu also noted that we should accelerate the transformation of agricultural development mode, promote standard, ecological, large-scale and branding-building approaches of production, and bring the production sources under control. We should carry out strict supervision over the whole processes according to the law and make the “Farm to Table” chain traceable. We should try our best to realize the pass rate of major agro-products in quality & safety inspection above 97% by the end of the 13th Five Year Plan, and ensure no major agro-product quality and safety incidents across the country.
