The government of Argentina has decided to intervene in a long dispute between local farmers and multinational Monsanto. The country's president, Cristina Kirchner, announced that the government will edit a decree which does not allow Monsanto to charge for the technology through the productivity obtained at the harvest with Intacta RR2.

The new law would force the company to charge for unit of seed sold at a price fixed through a contract. This means that farmers will not need to pay US$ 15 per ton of soybeans sold where there was use of the Intacta RR2 technology.

Last week, farmers, cooperative unions, collectors, and brokers met with exporters at the Rosario Board of Trade to request an exemption of charge of the "Monsanto" clause, which cites the royalties charged by the company.

One month ago, trading companies such as Cargill, Bunge, Louis Dreyfus and Vicentín began to charge the clause. Before, the payment was already required by ADM-Toepfer and Compañia de Granos. Exporters said that they run the risk of having the goods blocked in Europe if they do not charge the royalties, or the clause, previously.

Representative entities of the rural sector in Argentina were caught by surprise with the decision and praised the president Cristina Kirchner, known for having conflicts with the sector. Farmers were guided to request that the clause is not charged, even though the decree was not published yet.
