The Tennessee-based agricultural company Helena Chemical has been fined $225,000 for the alleged improper disposal of a restricted pesticide in northeastern Oklahoma, US.
U.S. Attorney Danny Williams of Tulsa says Helena Chemical Co. entered a guilty plea for unlawfully disposing the restricted pesticide at its facility in Welch in Craig County.
The plea agreement says that for at least six months beginning in May 2013, Helena disposed of unused pesticide by discharging it onto the ground and allowing it to run onto an adjacent property and into the Little Cabin Creek.
If exposed to the pesticide's active ingredients, a person could experience difficulty breathing, weakness, irritation of the eyes, and suffer from liver damage.
