Brazil has imported a record 418,000 tons of agrochemicals in 2014, including technical and formulated products. The importing value reached US$ 7.3 billion, with an increase of 2.4% compared to 2013, when US$ 7.1 billion valued products were imported in the country. The National Union of Industries of Crop Protection Products (Sindiveg) revealed the figures.
Pushed by an outbreak of corn earworm and soybean looper, volume of imported insecticides reached 127,500 tons, with a significant increase of 13.26% comparing to previous year, value to be US$ 2.7 billion.
Even though with a fall of 5.12%, herbicide still ranked first in importing volume, reaching 225,190 tons, which was resulted by the drought of last year in the country and the weeds incidence reduction accordingly.
"The fact is that we will still be heavily dependent of imported agrochemicals. Around 80% of the products sold in Brazil comes from abroad," affirmed Ivan Sampaio, Information Manager of Sindiveg. He also reminded that, of the 300 active ingredients available in the market, only ten were synthesized in Brazil, while during the years from 1970 to 1980, 80% of the products sold in the country were made locally.
According to Sampaio, the regulatory burdens are the main problem faced by the sector. For the industries, it has been easier to import a product than to manufacture the products in Brazil. "There is a lot of restriction, a lot of inspection (to manufacture a product). And there is not an equality with the imported product," highlighted Sampaio. According to him, another complicating factor is the slow process of authorization of new registrations in Brazil.
