Fungicide was the category of agrochemicals that had presented the most significant jump of sales in Brazil in 2014 with an increase of 12.1%, adding US$ 2.91 billion. The number were released by the National Union of Industries of Crop Protection Products (Sindiveg).
The big Asian rust outbreak provoked considerable losses on soybeans and required more investments of the producers. "Favorable climate conditions to rust and the disrespect of fallowing in some regions that contributed to elevate the pressure over the disease," explained the information manager of Sindiveg, Ivan Sampaio.
Even though there was a growth of fungicide sales, the category remains on third place at the list of general sales (24%). The leadership is still insecticide with 39.9% of the total sales (US$ 4.892 billion), followed by herbicide with 32% (US$ 3.902 billion).
The corn earworm (caterpillar helicoverpa armigera) is the main cause of the maintenance of the insecticide at the top. "The farmers have lived better with helicoverpa. But people cared about the caterpillar and were not careful enough with other plagues considered secondary, such as the soybean looper, the fall armyworm and the whitefly," analyzed Sampaio.
There was an increase of 51.3% of sales of the products classified like "specialties" (patented) last year. However, they represent not only 24% of the market, being another 3/4 of the total generic products. "Two or three differentiate products were launched last year, mainly fungicides, which justify this increase of specialties," added Sampaio .
