Coffee growers from the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais will be able to continue to use DuPont’s insecticide cyantraniliprole (trade-marked as Cyazypyr), to help  combat the coffee borer beetle. The permission was released by Brazil's Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply MAPA), which extended for one year period the ordinance that allows the imports of the product commercialized by DuPont , under emergent and temporary situation.

The local farmers, after the ban of endosulfan were left without any other alternatives to combat the plague. Cyazypyr was allowed to be used in 2014 with expiration date to March 13,2015.   The extension occurs in urgent period to avoid new losses, while followed by the challenge how to make the measure definitive and let the companies can sell the product.

According to the director of the Federation of Agriculture and Livestock of Minas Gerais, Breno Mesquita, the extension of the ordinance, which allows the use of cyantraniliprole, is fundamental to avoid more losses on coffee.

"If coffee borer beetle can‘t be controlled correctly, it would be accounted for big losses on harvest and quality of the grain. The extension for one year meets the industry demand," assesses Mesquita.

Yet according to Mesquita, the procedure to register the active ingredient in the country is still bureaucratic. "Our desire is that more companies, besides DuPont, can provide more products in the Brazilian market. The diversification of products is important to stimulate the competition between companies, leaving producers more options." explains Mesquita.
