The application of the herbicide 2,4-D was prohibited in its formulation “isobutyl ester” in the province of Santa Fe - the third most populous in Argentina. Besides, the formulation "dimethylamine salt" was severely restricted and could only be sprayed through aerial application 6,000 meters away from an urban perimeter and 1,000 meters away from population center if sprayed on land.
The restriction, imposed by the Production Ministry of the province, was requested by the "Nature Protection Center" and the "Solidarity Consciousness " through a petition moved on June of 2014. The 2,4-D is the second most used herbicide in Argentinean agriculture, and the third most prevalent in the United States.
With this prohibition, Santa Fe joins a list of the other Argentine provinces that impose restrictions on agrochemicals, including Chaco, Santiago del Estaro, Entre Ríos, and Córdoba. The legislation determines that the goal is to protect "the urban perimeter, settlements, rural schools, gardens, agricultural centers, rivers, streams, lakes, and water features, artesian wells for human consumption".
