The Portuguese market of agrochemical products has grown approximately 7.5% in 2014 with a market value of 118 million euros. The result represents an increase of over 8 million euros compared to the previous year, according to data released by the National Association of Crop Protection Plants Industry of that country.
According to the association, the jump occurs after a period of some stagnation in the Portuguese market. The association says that the increase observed last year "was pushed by the climate conditions in the period, which favored the incidences of diseases on crops and resulted in more use of fungicides".
The association yet explains that abundant rains verified in 2014 brought "a major development of weeds". This might have led the agents of the sector to spray more herbicides.
Other relevant indicator is the "Phyto-value", pointed out by the system that collects empty packages of agrochemicals. According to official data, 297 tons empty packages were collected in 2014, increasing 14.4% the volume comparing to 2013. Therefore, Portugal has reached a collection rate of 38.4% of the total packages in the market.
