The annual growth rate of vegetable consumption in Vietnam reached 10.9% from 2007–2013

In 2013, the leading consuming markets of vegetables were China (586.15 million tonnes), India (119.09 million tonnes), the USA (38.83 million tonnes), Turkey (27.37 million tonnes), Iran (23.65 million tonnes) and Egypt (20.56 million tonnes), which together accounted for approximately 73.9% of global consumption. These countries are also the leading producers of vegetables (primary) in the world. 

The highest annual growth rates of vegetables (primary) consumption from 2007–2013 were registered in Viet Nam with 10.9% growth, India and the Russian Federation with 5.4% and 3.6% growth, respectively. 

With nearly 586.15 million tonnes of vegetables consumed in 2013, China became the world’s leading vegetables consuming country. Per capita consumption in China was estimated at 413.75 kg/year – two times higher than the global average (180.60 kg/year). Following China was Turkey (365.26 kg/year), Egypt (250.57 kg/year) and Italy (211.58 kg/year). India and Mexico had the lowest levels of consumption – 95.11 kg/year and 64.94 kg/year, respectively. 

In Egypt, per capita vegetables (primary) consumption stablized at 250.57 kg/year (2013 data, 252.13 kg/year in 2007).

In China and Viet Nam, vegetables (primary) consumption has grown rapidly in recent years. In 2013, China’s and Viet Nam’s per capita consumption reached 413.75 kg/year and 365.26 kg/year (twice more than the world-average of 180.60 kg/year) as compared with 358.00 kg/year and 357.31 kg/year in 2007. 

In developing countries, vegetables (primary) consumption growth is much more pronounced than in developed countries.
