The new Agriculture minister of Brazil, Kátia Abreu, announced that the government is assessing the creation of a new agency that would exclusively analyze and release new agricultural chemical products. The goal is to curb bureaucracy at the registration of new active ingredients to control plagues and diseases - after an outcry of the production sector.
"It would be a safe mechanism for the consumer because it would not eliminate the technical criteria, but the bureaucracy. If we don't use the agrochemical, we would produce less and this would alter the product price for the final consumer," justified the minister.
The idea of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply is to create an specific agency, similar to the National Technical Commission of Bio-security (CTNBIO), which analyzes genetically-modified organisms in Brazil. Aimed to analyze agrochemical registration, this new institution would be calle National Technical Commission of Phytosanitary Products (CTNFITO).
According to the minister, the guidance to diminish came directly from president Dilma Rosseff, who requested a focus on the citizens' needs. The minister said that is necessary "to invert the logic" that says that the citizen needs to serve the state: "Actually, the citizen determines his necessities and the government has to attend," she added.
