Agrovista UK has purchased South West Seeds, one of Scotland’s leading independent seed businesses.  The deal will make Agrovista the single shareholder of the business.

James Robertson, group chairman of Agrovista, said that the fit is “exceptionally good” for both companies, directly complementing Agrovista’s market-leading position in specialist agronomy, crop protection, seed, amenity and horticulture supply.

During the past 30 years South West Seeds has gained a reputation for providing quality seed and related products, professional advice and a first class service from its team of highly qualified seed specialists and agronomists.

Mr Robertson added:  “We have had a dialogue with South West Seeds for some time and this move is great for all parties.

“It further emphasises the investment strategy for our company and our shareholder, the Marubeni Corporation, which has identified agriculture and food production as a core division for the future.

“Their acquisition of Gavilon last year has made Marubeni the second largest grain handler in the world; this coupled with a substantial fertiliser business presents great opportunities for our global business.”

This announcement ties in with the ongoing investment in the Wallace of Kelso business, announced two years ago, and complements the existing Agrovista depots covering Scotland and the borders in Newton Stewart, Elgin, Perth and Morpeth.

All staff will transfer to Agrovista in this acquisition.
