Alagoas, Bahia, Goiás, Minas Gerais, Maranhão and Mato Grosso are the Brazilian states in the condition of phytosanitary emergency for the corn earworm. They are part of the suppression plan of the plague and are oriented to adopt a set of measures coordinated by the country's Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply described at the ordinance 1,109 published in 2013.
Five of these states had the emergency status renewed recently with the goal of bringing more security for farmers. One of the decisions brought by the plan and brings benefits for producers is the temporary emergency authorization for imports of agrochemical products which have Emamectin Benzoate as an active ingredient to contain the earworm.
Still in this context, last year, the Department of Crop Protection published the act No. 60, which established priorities for the registration of agrochemicals capable of combating the plague. Other measures adopted by the Ministry involve the release of biological control agents; the cultivars use that restrict and eliminate the populations plague and fallowing to leave the land without crops and free of hosts.
Among the measures that the ministry adopted for the caterpillar control was the institution of the Management Group of Phytosanitary Emergency Situations with the goal of identifying, proposing, and articulating the emergency actions to contain the plague and assure the complete reestablishment of the normality.
The hornbook "How to combat Helicoverpa armigera", the ministry details guidance for the farmers. The text advises, for instance, the adoption of emergency integrated management: "Integration of different control technologies through the identification of major plagues, studies of climate factors, assessment of development plants and damages," reads the document.
