A return to more typical weather in the spring should help 2015 Canadian sunflower planted area get back to the level that was intended last year, according to an industry official.

Ben Friesen, purchasing manager for Legumex Walker Inc. in Winkler, Man., said it was expected that sunflower planted area in 2014 would reach around 100,000 acres. However, spring rains flooded many Prairie fields and ultimately left sunflower acreage at around 80,000 instead.

“I think we’ll recapture that (acreage) back and I think we’ll be better than last year,” Friesen said.

In its first supply-demand estimates for the 2015-16 crop year, Agriculture Canada forecast new-crop sunflower planted area at just under 100,000 acres.

Meanwhile, Friesen said he is optimistic about the upcoming marketing year for sunflowers.

“In general, I feel pretty good about the year. I think as far as the market is going, I feel it will be a good market for sunflowers.”

Due to the relative weakness in the Canadian dollar, he said the old-crop sunflower market is quite active. Prices are hovering in the 30 cent/lb range for confectionary seed which is similar to much of last year. New crop is sitting at 28 cents, according to Friesen.

“The price hasn’t changed a whole lot but there’s maybe a little better movement right at the moment.”

One of Canada’s largest competitors, Argentina, is already starting preparations for the new-crop harvest.

“They’re coming into harvest of their crop again within a month. They’ll be starting to harvest here in mid-March,” Friesen said, noting dry conditions in the country have raised expectations for the crop.

“They were drier which is usually good for sunflowers so I imagine they’ll be tough on the market again this summer.”
