Echa's Biocidal Products Committee has decided not to approve an active substance, for the first time. During its recent meeting, the BPC decided by consensus that the insecticide triflumuron should not be approved for use in biocidal products, under product-type 18.
Committee chair, Erik van de Plassche says no safe use could be identified in relation to the compound's environmental risk. Out of three possible types of application, two would lead to “unacceptable environmental risk”, while the third was only safe under conditions the committee considered “too limited” to accept.
The EU Standing Committee on biocidal products will now vote on the decision. If it agrees with the BPC's opinion, the Commission will formally adopt the non-approval.
