BASF introduced in Brazil its new rice cultivar (SCS121 CL) with tolerance to the Kifix® herbicide (imazapic, imazapyr). The company notes that seed has an elevated productivity potential, stability of production, high industrial yields, culinary quality and adaptation to the process of parboiling.

The cultivar was developed by researchers in the Experimental Station of Itajaí, Santa Catarina, and cultivated through the Clearfield® Production System of BASF rice. This system combines three production factors: certified seed, Kifix ® herbicide and a sustainability program aims for greater longevity to the system.

"Our goal is to bring to rice growers the Clearfield variety option with high potential of productivity and quality with a long cycle and adapted to the pre-germinated cropping system," said Edison Cotelo, the head of BASF in the partnership. The herbicide Kifix ® is registered in the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply under the No. 007907.

The seeds of SCS121 CL cultivar will be available for the 2015/2016 crop with a forecast of use of the technology on 25,000 hectares. It is worthy to remind that the state of Santa Catarina is the second largest irrigated rice producer in the country, having produced 1.08 million tons in 149.8k hectares planted.
