Canada to continue register fungicide quintozene

The Canadian Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) has proposed to confirm the current registration of quintozene in Canada. The agency also proposed that quintozene TC can be used only for the manufacturing or formulation of end-use products. The current registrant is Amvac Chemical Corporation, a subsidiary of America Vanguard.
The agency has initiated a special review of products containing quintozene based on the prohibited use decisions taken by European Commission in 2000 and Switzerland in 1998. The PMRA completed the re-evaluation of quintozene in 2009. Following re-evaluation, most uses of quintozene were cancelled with the exception of uses on ornamentals (bulb dip) and cole crops, and the end-use product of quintozene is not permitted in Canada after April 26th 2015. The aspects of concern identified from the European Commission and the Switzerland decisions are related to the use of end-use products. In Canada, however, the discontinuation of end-use products makes occupational and environmental exposure from quintozene not expected.
PMRA is seeking public comment until February 1st 2015.
