Brazil's National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) approved two regulatory initiatives to propose the banning of parathion-methyl and phorate as agrochemicals, published in No. 240 of the Union's Official Gazette. The two products passed reevaluation of safety parameters by the agency, which is responsible in Brazil to evaluate the impact of agrochemicals on human health on rural workers and consumers.
"By law, the registration of agrochemicals has no expiration dates, but the reevaluations are made to review products safety limits based on new scientific information. The agency already held public consultations with indications of bans of these two substances previously. Those are rigorous analysis that seeks to gather all the evidences and scientific work that indicate relevant data for human health," the agency said.
Since 2009, when Anvisa started the reevaluation of 14 substances used in Brazil, four agrochemicals were already banned and other two were altered in its limits and use recommendations.
