FMC Agricultural Solutions in partnership with other companies hired the consultancy specialized on soils for a survey about nematodes populations in the Brazilian state of Goiás, corresponding to the planting area of 6000 hectares. The study found the presence of Heterodera genues (cysts nematode) in two municipalities, Meloidogyne (root-knot nematode) in six municipalities and Pratylenchus (lesions nematode) in all places evaluated.
"It is important to highlight that in Bom Jesus and Goiatuba there were the incidences of the three genus mentioned. The lesions nematode shown more distribution frequency and was found in 96% of the samples analyzed. For the majority of the samples, the population levels were high for cysts nematode and root-knot nematode," explained by the authors Marcos Augusto de Freitas (phytopathologist), Leonardo de Moura Borges (expert on soil management), and biologist Sildete Luiza dos Santos (lab technician).
The study also highlighted the importance of surveying nematodes species and populations. "It helps in adopting strategies and tactics for sustainable control of these microorganisms. It helps indicating the best variety to be used in crop rotation and the ideal chemical or biological products for seed treatment or application in the planting furrow."
Other factors that the survey points out is that to ensure high productivity and sustainability in production systems, there is no "a magical pill" to solve any phytosanitary problems. The solution for each of these problems normally is composed of small bricks. The higher the number of bricks, the closer the farmers gets to the construction of the "ideal castle", technically named sustainable agriculture.
