Syngenta will introduce a new herbicide to aid in resistance management, which will be marketed as Broadworks™ herbicide upon registration. The ais, mesotrione, will be the first HPPD-inhibitor for tree nuts, stone fruit and citrus.
Broadworks aids in herbicide resistance management by controlling weeds that are resistant to other modes of action, such as glyphosate-resistant marestail and fleabane. It must be used as part of a weed management program that includes herbicides with different modes of action.
“As herbicide resistance continues to expand, a need for diverse weed management strategies grows with it.” said John Foresman, product lead, Syngenta. “It is a broad-spectrum product that will play an important part in resistance management for permanent crop production.”
The active ingredient in Broadworks will also provide:
-Broad-spectrum and systemic activity on broadleaf weed species
-Residual weed control
-Enhanced burndown and residual weed control when tank mixed
-Demonstrated crop safety for tree nuts, stone fruit and citrus
Broadworks is a systemic herbicide. It is readily taken up by the leaves, shoots or roots and is translocated in both the xylem and the phloem, complex tissues that perform transportation of food and water in a plant. Within 24 hours of application, as much as 88 percent of the applied material is translocated out of the treated zone and is distributed throughout the plant.
“The result of this is a more thorough and effective means of control as it works through the whole plant, not just from the outside,” said Foresman.
