The cotton boll weevil was the main pest recorded in Mato Grosso do Sul, a state in the center-west of Brazil. According to a survey of the Mato Grosso do Sul Association of Cotton Growers, in some cases 32 applications were needed to guarantee the control of cotton boll weevil.
The high infestation of insects was reflected directly by the high rates captures (80%) of the pheromone-based traps. The association announces that it will intensify its actions to combat boll weevil in Mato Grosso do Sul.
"The bad destruction of cotton crop debris, large population of insects on shelters, allied with low efficiency of some chemicals aggravate the problem even more in the state," pointed out the association in a newsletter.
In Mato Grosso do Sul, the area planned for cotton crops will be reduced by 10% in 2014/15 season reaching between 33.8k to 37.5k hectares. Planting in the state starts in early December and goes until January.
