The planting area of herbicide tolerant GM canola increased by 56.9% to 349,000 hectares in 2014 compared to last year, according to the Agricultural Biotechnology Council of Australia (ABCA). GM canola represents 14% of the total canola area (2.48 million ha), while this number was 9% in 2013. GM canola has been grown in New South Wales and Victoria since 2009 and in Western Australia since 2010. In Western Australia, GM canola accounted for 21% of the canola area in this region, while this number was 9% in each of the other two states. The ABCA noted the data was from National Oilseeds Federation and Monsanto Australia.
