Since the first release of GM seeds in Brazil in 1996, not less than 35.54 billions of water were saved in the country, according to a study from Céleres consultancy. The figure cover 1996/97 to 2012/13.

"Because of resistance to stresses, GM crops discard the use of agchem, which drastically reduces the need of water use", said Jorge Attie, researcher from Céleres.

According to him, the saved water "is enough to supply a city of 808,000 people for a year. Between 2013/14 and 2022/23, 169.3 billion liters of water will be saved, a volume consumed by four million people with a per capita demand of 120 liters a day".

Of this total, the researcher noted that 57.5% of the water is saved on soybean crops, 40.3% on corn, and 2.3% on cotton. And corn saves more per hectare compared to soybeans and cotton.
