Fertilizers delivered to Brazilian farmers has grown 36% in the last ten years from 2003 to 2013. According to the National Association of Promotion of Fertilizers (Anda), fertilizers sales in 2013 increased by 3.07% to R$ 34.2 billion, compared with R$ 33.2 billion in the previous year.
The executive-director at Anda, David Roquetti Filho, explains that bigger sales of fertilizers and agrochemicals occurred in response to the increase of agricultural production, but mostly because of a larger input of technology.
In addition to higher use of technology, analysts also point out that several factors to explain the increased agricultural inputs: the increased planted area of some crops, the floating exchange rates and higher incidence of pests and diseases.
Another example of this increase is the sector of crop protection. The National Union of Crop Protection Industry Products (Sindiveg) forecast a revenues increase around 15% to $11 billion in 2013. According to Ivan Sampaio, information manager, better price of commodities, notably soybeans, stimulated agrochemical (mostly insecticides) sales.
