The average mortality index of Helicoverpa armigera (corn earworm) through the action of natural predators (parasitoids, pathogens, and nematodes), is 60.9% in Brazil. According to survey authored by Brazil's Agricultural Research Company (Embrapa) released at the 34th Forum of Soyean Research, in Londrina (Paraná), this would confirm the positive results of these organisms to control corn earworm.
The study consisted of the evaluation of 1,837 caterpillars collected in 16 municipalities of the southern state of Paraná. Only 29.8% of corn earworm were developed in a healthy manner. The research revealed that the parasitoids contributed the most population reduction of earworm, causing 48.9% of mortality.
"Therefore, it was evident that the natural enemies are important for a natural control of the pest", explain the authors of the publication. "It is important to highlight that non-selective insecticide applications, on an abusive way, only exacerbates the earworm problems, and unnecessarily increase the production cost", concluded the authors.
