According to a survey of Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, chilli show the highest level of agrochem residue among all crops in the Amazonas state of Brazil, with 84% samples were found to contain residues, followed by potatoes ( 51.9%), carrot (48.9%), and cucumber (32.7%).
"These products should be avoided because they are poisons at the table", said Elisa Wandelli, researcher at Brazil's National Agricultural Research Company (Embrapa) in Amazonas. Entities such as the Maniva Agroecology Network of Amazonas and Embrapa, requested the deployment of public policies based on the promotion of more non-pesticide-based agricultural production in the Amazon region. "We have signed partnerships between research institutions, teaching and the civil society, as well as the executive organisms and watchdogs to make a detailed work plan about alternatives to pesticide use" said Wandelli.
