Chinese agrochemical company Shaanxi Sunger Road Bio-Science Co. Ltd recently obtained a patent in China for an antiviral agent. The product was developed by Sunger in collaboration with Northwest A&F University. The agent, extracted from the Malvaceae species, is natural, safe, and highly efficient.
Plague caused by plant viruses annually cause yield losses of 10-30% worldwide and economic losses of approximately $20 billion. Although many mixed pesticide formulations are used in China, their performance in combating plague has not been very satisfactory as they act on viruses only indirectly.
The major antiviral agent registered in China contain moroxydine hydrochloride as the active ingredient. However, long-term use of moroxydine hydrochloride can cause drug residue, which may lead to drug resistance in the human body.
The patent applied by Sunger plugs a gap in the line of botanical antiviral agents used in China. Sunger expects to launch the product soon.
