Planting tomatoes on open fields is a challenge for tomato growers due to soil diseases such as Fusarium 3 and Ralstonia solanacearum. In order to attend these needs in Brazil, Bayer CropScience Vegetable Seeds recently introduced to the market a rootstock developed specifically for planting tomatoes on open fields. The technological solution allows grafting on high productivity tomatoes and brings resistance to the main soils diseases and germinating higher quality fruits.
According to Fabrício Benatti, general manager at Bayer CropScience Vegetable Seeds in Brazil, the Endurance seeds can collaborate with farmers who plant open field tomatoes and are being forced to change the area due to aggressive disease attacks. "Each year, farmers migrate to higher areas, initially free of Fusarium 3 and Ralstonia solanacearum, which increases production costs and derails farm business. The Endurance seed is a pioneer in the market, with this new method the production can be made on areas firstly considered unviable. In 2013, nearly 200,000 grafted plants were sold, and in 2014 there will be 3 million plants", highlighted by Benatti.
"Cultivating tomatoes on open fields was always a big challenge because of infestation of diseases in the soil. With this solution, the difficulties of this activity were minimized. Now I wait for the harvest of an area of nearly 100 hectares where I planted one million seedlings", said Brazilian grower Geraldo Gobbi.
