Nigeria to Set up N190m Organic Fertiliser Plant

Nigeria, The Bauchi State Government said it would set up a N190 million neem based organic fertiliser plant with the capacity to produce 3,600 tonnes of fertiliser annually.
The Commissioner for Science and Technology, Alhaji Bala Abdullahi, said that the plant when established would maximise the exploitation of the state’s bio-resources and meet the high demand for fertiliser by farmers
According to him, the step would also boost fertilizer supply and enhance the drive towards agricultural transformation, saying that the ministry had already received a proposal from the National Research Institute for Chemical Technology, Zaria which had shown interest in building the plant at the cost of N190 million.
He explained that the neem based organic fertiliser would be formulated from the neem tree seeds, a specie of the mahogany family locally referred to as Dogon Yaro, adding that ``Bauchi state is home to an estimated population of over 15 million of such trees.
"There are also other needed raw materials such as rock phosphate, limestone, poultry manure, urea and gum Arabic.Other products from the neem tree may include neem oil, bio-pesticide and azadrachtin powder among others.We want to exploit these potentials to meet the fertiliser needs of our active agrarian population, "Abdullahi said.
The commissioner added that besides provision of fertiliser to the farmers, the plant would also generate employment opportunities to youths in the state, saying that``In terms of employment, a typical neem factory with a capacity of producing just 10 tonnes of fertiliser daily would employ about 42 workers.
``By the time the capacity reaches 10,000 tonnes per annum, it may employ up to 4,000 workers.This figure may be more when those engaged in the seed collection and marketing are added,'' he said.
The commissioner assured that the project would take off as soon as Governor Isa Yuguda approves the release of the funds.
