Summary of China's Pesticide Import & Export in 2013

1. General Data of Import & Export

According to preliminary statistics of the Institute for the Control of Agrochemicals, Ministry of Agriculture (ICAMA), China’s pesticide import and export both increased in 2013 in respect of volume and value. The pesticide import and export volume are respectively 62,200 tons and 1.62 million tons, 16.31% and 1.41% up YOY; import and export value are respectively US$698 million and US$8.53 billion, 23.76% and 8.39% YOY.

The pesticide export volume and value in 2013 respectively account for 96.30% and 92.42% of total pesticide import & export volume and value, where export volume is 26 times of import while export value is 12 times of import, resulting in a favorable balance as high as US$7.82 billion.

2. Import & Export by Categories

Technicals & Formulations:

One of the special features of pesticide export in 2013 is the intensified change of export structure, where proportion of technicals and formulations changed significantly. Pesticide technical export volume and value accounted for respectively 38.80% and 59.63% of the total export of 2013, which dropped respectively by 8% and 6%; pesticide formulations import volume and value accounted for respectively 90.00% and 85.73% of the total import, which increased respectively by 2% and 5%.

The pesticide technical export volume and value in 2013 were respectively 629,200 tons and US$5.08 billion; pesticide formulations export volume and value were respectively 992,600 tons and US$3.44 billion; pesticide technical import volume and value in 2013 were respectively 6,200 tons and US$99 million; pesticide formulations import volume and value were respectively 55,900 tons and US$598 million.

Pesticide Export Category:

In 2013 herbicide export volume and value were respectively 1.09 million tons and US$5.04 billion, accounting for respectively 67.65% and 59.21% of the total export volume and value; insecticide export volume and value were respectively 366,800 tons and US$2.35 billion, accounting for respectively 22.62% and 27.641% of the total export volume and value; fungicide export volume and value were respectively 133,300 tons and US$970 million, accounting for respectively 8.22% and 11.39% of the total export volume and value.


Pesticide Import Category:

Herbicide import volume and value were respectively 23,000 tons and US$335 million, accounting for respectively 37.02% and 47.99% of the total import volume and value; insecticide import volume and value were respectively 15,500 tons and US$183 million, accounting for respectively 25.01% and 26.24% of the total import volume and value; fungicide import volume and value were respectively 23,000 tons and US$163 million, accounting for respectively 37.13% and 23.44% of the total import volume and value.


3. Import & Export by Varieties

Export:

In 2013 export pesticide involves 414 effective ingredients, which cover vast majority of the registered generic active ingredients. There are 12 exported varieties exceeding a value of US$100 million including glyphosate (glyphosate-isopropylammonium), paraquat, imidacloprid, atrazine, etc., which amount in total to volume of 1.0068 million tons and value of US$4.41 billion, accounting for respectively 62.07% and 51.81% of the total export of the year at a growth rate of 10.54% and 17.99% respectively.

Import:

In 2013 import pesticide involves 200 active ingredients; there are 14 imported varieties exceeding US$10 million including chlorantraniliprole, penoxsulam, tebuconazole, pyraclostrobin, etc., which amount in total to volume of 17,500 tons and value of US$315 million, accounting for respectively 28.24% and 84.93% of the total import of the year at a growth rate of 73.24% and 84.93% respectively.

4. Territory of Trade


Continent of Export:

In 2013 pesticide export volume and value to Asia and South America accounted for respectively 60.51% and 58.41% of the total. Export volume and value to Asia were respectively 575,700 tons and US$2.64 billion accounting for respectively 35.50% and 31.02% of the total; export volume and value to South America were respectively 405,600 tons and US$2.33 billion accounting for respectively 25.01% and 27.39% of the total.

Country of Export:

In 2013 pesticide was exported to 170 countries or regions. There are 21 countries where export value exceeding US$100 million include US, Brazil, Argentina, Thailand, Australia and Indonesia, which amount in total to volume of 1.19 million tons and value of US$6.29 billion accounting for respectively 73.55% and 73.84% of the total.

Continent of Import:

In 2013 pesticide import volume and value from Europe accounted for respectively 89.05% and 86.67% of the total. Pesticide import volume and value from Europe were respectively 19,100 tons and US$325 million accounting for respectively 30.63% and 46.62% of the total import; pesticide import volume and value from Asia were respectively 36,300 tons and US$279 million accounting for respectively 58.42% and 40.05% of the total import.

Country of Import:

In 2013 pesticide import involved 37 countries or regions. There are 9 countries where import exceeded US$100 million including Germany, France, India and US, which amount in total to volume of 45,000 tons and value of US$577 million accounting for respectively 72.41% and 82.77% of the total.
