China has recently announced to totally ban the use of methyl bromide in farming starting from 1 January 2015, according to information from the Technical Training Workshop on Replacement of Methyl Bromide & Soil Disinfection held in China.
Methyl bromide is a world recognized most effective product for soil fumigation, but it causes damage to ozone layer. As a follow-up to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, international organizations have jointly carried out series of methyl bromide replacement initiatives to seek reliable product and solution to replace methyl bromidein farming, whilst agricultural development and farmer’s increase of earnings are ensured. The decision to phase out methyl bromide is a reflection of the compliance of Chinese government to its committed goals.
